First grade has been discussing Rocks, Minerals, and Soil. Alex G., a first grader in Ms. Delgado's class is very talented and has a hobby collecting arrowhead and making arrowheads. In the picture, Alex is "flint knapping”. Flint knapping is the process of making stone tools (i.e. arrowheads, projectile points, hand axes, etc.). Flint knapping has been around for about 4 millions years.
The tool Alex used is called a pressure flaker. It is a piece of copper that has been filed down to two sides, one squared and blunt and the other to a point. These sides allow him to shape the arrow head into the shape that he wants it. The pressure flaker is the final stage of the arrow head process.
He holds the piece of flint on a thick leather pad to protect his hand from getting cut. In his other hand the holds the tool placing it on the edge of the piece of flint he is working. He uses his legs to help make the pressure he needs to chip away the flakes of flint by squeezing his legs together. He slowly chips away at the flint one small flake at a time forming and creating his arrow head.
